New Year's Runs and Fun

So not only did the Disco Biscuits close out 2016 with three shows at the Tabernacle in Atlanta, GA this year, but Joe Russo's Almost Dead closed out the year with a number of shows, including a surprise acoustic show under the moniker Data Models which is an anagram for Almost Dead at Three's Brewing in Brooklyn on 12/28, leading up to their official three night run which began with an intimate show at the amazing Brooklyn Bowl, leading up to two sold-out nights at the historic Capitol Theatre in Port Chester!  Oh, and I neglected to mention, the Benevento Russo Duo played a surprise show for free at Three's Brewing on 12/27 before all this, THEIR FIRST SHOW IN SIX YEARS!!!!!

Video and audio of all, or rather most of this is on the internets already, and if not, will probably be soon, so go to your youtube's and archive.org's and whatever the hell else people are using these days to check shit out.  Instagram??!?  Certainly not blogger, haha.

Thursday's show by JRAD at the Brooklyn Bowl was sick and a great official kick off to the group's NYE run with a heavy second set.  Friday's show at the Cap included a cover of the Beatle's "Day Tripper," interwoven into "Bird Song."  Then during the second set came a sick guest spot from Cochemea Gastelum (famous in his own right, but also known from the Budos Band and the Dap-Kings) on BARI sax during "Viola Lee Blues," in the second set, as well as a performance of the Benevento Russo Duo original "Becky!"  Not to mention Alicia Chakour, who provided vocals for Pigpen's "The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion)" in the first set, and more vocals sprinkled throughout the rest of the night, which concluded with a heavy encore of "The Weight" by The Band.  Saturday's NYE show kicked off with the Antibalas' horn section walking through the crowd to the stage, kicking the night off in style with "Ruben & Cherise," and stayed on stage for most of the rest of the night!  The ensemble then performed "Loose Lucy," as well as a sick bust-out cover of The Band's song "Life is a Carnival!"  Nicole Atkins provided excellent vocals through much of the night, and the third set kicked off with a sick segment leading up to the NYE countdown which saw Sunny Jain of Red Baraat playing the dhol with Joe on set for a sick "Drums" > "Tzofeh" (Masada cover) > Balloon drop.  The encore saw the band rip into a furious "Kashmir," (Led Zeppelin), hinting at the group's Bustle In Your Hedgerow origins, the cover band that came before JRAD, which included all the same musicians, except Tommy Hamilton, and who performed at the BK Bowl the night before JRAD's first show ever back in 2013.  What was supposed to be a one-night only performance, has now lead to a total of 95 shows, and concluded in true Dead fashion with a rendition of "One More Saturday Night."

Oh, and they just announced six more shows at the BK Bowl, over two weekends in March!!  So yeah, just that for now.  HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!
