Autumn of My Life

I found a child's practice guitar that smelled like cat piss and asked my mother to play a song so I could learn it and play it for her.

So Many Roads

Jerry's farewell ode to us, from the last show the Grateful Dead ever played, if you can listen to and watch this video and not choke up at least a little bit... I don't know what to make of that.

Phil, Kraz, & Sir Joe Russo

Man, I miss living in New York City, I remember countless times walking past some musicians in a park and wondering why so few people stopped to appreciate the music, but man is THIS something I wish I had caught! Well, on 11/09/13, in the midst of NYC's Jazz & Colors Festival, before the Phil Lesh & Friends show at the Nokia Theatre, (it'll ALWAYS be the Nokia in my heart!), and the Eric Krasno, Neal Evans, Joe Russo show at the Brooklyn Bowl, (another fire trio!), Phil, Kraz, and Russo teamed up for an unannounced half hour jam in front of a tiny crowd of onlookers in the middle of Central Park.

Despite my disappointment regarding the announcement of Furthur's hiatus in 2014, it wasn't long before I wondered what Phil would be up to, and sure enough, the New York Times reported that Phil will not be putting down that bass anytime soon, and it sure sounds like he's intending on bringing out a whole new host of "Friends" next year. I've been hoping for Nels Cline, and while it looks like he'll be busy doing some touring around Europe with Medeski, Martin & Wood in March, that doesn't mean he couldn't play with Phil Lesh & Friends too, in fact, if those shows will be starting in April, the timing looks pretty good! And I'm super excited for some Medeski, Cline, Martin & Wood action, way more so than I would have been if they were to do another album/tour with Scofield. And PL&F has played with Medeski and Scofield in the past, so whose to say we won't see all three of those musicians with PL&F next year. And it looks like there's a pretty good chance we'll get some PL&F shows with Kraz too! On 11/14/13, at the BK Bowl, the Terrapin Crossroad's Band with Phil Lesh did in fact bring out Krasno for a number of songs, so that looks like a promising possibility as well, imagine PL&F with Kraz, Neal, and Deitch! Or with Alan Evans, for some straight up Phil Lesh & Soulive type action! Or perhaps we'll be seeing Phil for the next Bowlive residency at the BK Bowl! All I know is, I'll be seeing y'all next year in Port Chester at The Cap. A lot! And maybe, jussst mayyyybe, I'll be able to organize some after-parties at a secret location I know right across the water...

t-ham + barbs

I am just copying this article and posting a link to the soundcloud page because I'm in a hurry, but on 10/07/13, Barber played a number of songs with American Babies at the Brooklyn Bowl, 5/6 of the songs being covers that JGB played. Now we just need a BPm show with Barber! Anyway, check out American Babies' soundcloud page, (link at bottom of this post).

American Babies got some help from the Disco Biscuits' Jon “Barber” Gutwillig last night during their set at the Brooklyn Bowl. The guitarist came out for the last six songs of the set, which consisted of a few songs that the Jerry Garcia Band used to cover, as well as an American Babies original. One of the group’s JGB tribute songs was Bob Dylan’s classic “Tangled Up in Blue,” marking the first time that American Babies have covered the song and the first time that Gutwillig has covered a Dylan tune in concert. The guitarist also stuck around for takes on Jimmy Cliff’s “Harder They Come,” the Grateful Dead’s “Deal,” The Temptations “The Way You Do The Thing You Do,” American Babies’ “Joeline” and The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence.” With the exception of “Joeline,” it was the first time that American Babies has played all those songs as well.

Joe Russo's Almost Dead!

For the second night of the Freak's Ball XIII at the BK Bowl back on 1/26/13, Joe Russo followed up the previous night's Bustle in Your Hedgerow performance with the debut performance of a new ensemble called Joe Russo's Almost Dead, (I'll be abbreviating that to JRAD) featuring Joe Russo, Marco Benevento, Tommy Hamilton, Scott Metzger, and Dave Dreiwitz, performing the music of the Grateful Dead!!

What an amazing night of music! All I'll say is, if you like the Dead at all, make sure to check out this free matrix recording!

Why do I post this now? Because JRAD finally booked another performance! This time they'll be playing at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY on 12/27/13. Too bad this is right in the middle of the Biscuit's New Year's run. I wish this would've been a New Year's day show, but there's nothing saying they can't book a second night, or that something else might be brewing up for that day! Bring back The Join, or tbe Insane Lunchadors, or the L. Cool Trio!

Getting ready for The Big Up this weekend, whooooo!!! Can't wait to rage me some Brothers Past!

Check out these BPm* shows, but make sure you listen through some speakers with some thumping bass, after all, it's just not drum & bass without Clay's sub 80(hz~) dirty ass nuclear bass bombs!

*BPm is when BP plays their entire show improvised and without any vocals. I wish they would do this more often.

The Bug

"Skeng" ft. Killa P & Flowdan - This was one of THOSE songs back in '08, it became like an anthem, and still gets a crazy crowd reaction, and while I wasn't a fan of most of the other songs on this album, of couse, there was one other song that went hand in hand with this one.... "Poison Dart" ft Warrior Queen - another classic, but holy shit did Warrior Queen drive me crazy with her rasta pasta when she MC'd for The Bug at Sub Swara's 3rd year bash at Club Love (r.i.p.) that October. Here, I found a video: See what I mean?

Stephen Marley

"Hey Baby" ft Mos Def - What a great song, the lyrics are so heartfelt and really hit home. Plus Mos Def's verse is pretty sick, though it took me a few listens before it started to grow on me. "Hey Baby" (Acoustic) - In 2008, Stephen Marley released an acoustic version of his 2007 album Mind Control. It's really good. Stephen sings Mos Def's verse in this version. bonus: Download Sub Swara's remix of "Traffic Jam" ft Damian Marley here
I remember going nuts when Sub-Swara played this at B.B. King's at the Biscuits after-party 4.11.08, (arguably best show of the year, definitely one of the best 2.0 shows), weird how Bassnectar was also playing that after-party, and now look at him.

AMERIKKKA, FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!

Whitney Houston - National Anthem at the Super Bowl during the Persian Gulf War: RIP Whitney, one of the greatest voices of all time! She really set the standard here, and made people take note of different people's interpretations of the Anthem. My favorite part about her version is how she never loses sight of the beat and knows how to draw the notes out just right. For instance, I love when she gets to the part, "Ohhh sayyyyyy, does that starrrrrr, bangled...." because rather than randomly stretching out notes and having these awkward pauses, she instead slows the entire song down half-speed, turning those eight measures into sixteen, and that, imo, is why this version kicks so much ass! Jimi Hendrix @ Woodstock (1969) - IMO overrated, I'm not gonna get into that discussion, but you gotta include this. Phish Acapella @ Jones Beach 2012 - Not good haha, but a throw back to last summer's terr

I Fucking Love DMX

This is a great interview, lots of real talk, at one point this guy was saying that he likes Rick Ross "lyrically," the look on DMX's face when he heard that is great. Plus he tells the whole story about when he got arrested for impersonating an FBI agent at the airport. . Bonus videos: "Let Me Fly" - Such a great song "The Rain" "I Miss You" ft. Faith Evans - This song's about his grandmother passing, it came out around the time my grandfather passed away, so this song always had such a special meaning to me. "Life is What You Make It" ft. Nas & MC Ren - Holy shit that scene at the end of the middle verse kinda freaked me out, I forgot about this music video, but damn, it definitely hits home... "Damien I, II, III" - I love part one the best personally, though I'm biased cause I used to play this shit on repeat for hours "Rollin (Urban Assult Vehicle)" - lol Limp Bizkit ft. DMX, Method Man, & Redman, remember this shit? Cradle 2 the Grave Trailer - Jet Li and DMX co-starring? I was so pumped hahaha, I love Jet Li, and the when DMX is like "What are you like some type of kung-fu James Bond?" "Grand Finale" ft. Nas, Method Man, & Ja Rule - From the soundtrack to the movie Belly, which DMX and Nas had parts in, though it's really not that good of a movie. But this is a pretty dope video and it brings me back to the 90's when MTV was still relevant, and record labels were dropping hundreds of thousands of dollars for a single video!

Beenie Man & Mya

Throw Back of the Day!

Jamiroquai - Seven Days in Sunny June

FUCK YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh man all the memories and emotions this song brings back.... drinking wine and killing time!

I fucking love Jamiroquai!  Just for the record though, they're a band, not one singer, Jamiroquai's lead singer goes by Jay Dee or something like that which is a shame cause to us Americans Jay Dee is automatically Dilla of course.  But yeah, Jamiroquai = a band.

I really love the bridge 55 seconds in.  The way the bass drops out and the piano comes in and the way they play off each other is perfect, I love it!
